YWCA Tips for Setting and Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

Categories: Blog

Millions of Americans set New Year’s Resolutions to exercise more, get fit, and be healthier. And every year, we hear people say, “I’ve already failed at my resolutions,” by like January 16th. So how can you set a fitness-related resolution that you’re more likely to keep? We spoke with Matt Doherty, YWCA El Paso’s Fitness and Aquatics Administrator for his ideas and tips!

1. Be realistic. Set goals you can work up to and maintain.

If you’ve never run a mile before, don’t set a goal to run a mile a day starting on January 1st! Start small and build up to it. You may say something like, “I’m going to do some form of cardio three times a week.” That could be walking, jogging, running, using an elliptical, an aerobics class, etc. Once something becomes a habit and something you enjoy, you’ll be more likely to stick with it! Plus, if you set a goal to exercise two hours every day, the first time you miss a day, you may feel like you’ve failed and give up altogether.

2. Find something fun!

Running on a treadmill is one of the most popular forms of exercise. Running on a treadmill can also get old! Don’t pick a form of exercise that you don’t enjoy and expect to maintain that for the rest of your life. Try a Zumba class, a water aerobics class, a salsa class, a Float Fit class, a step aerobics class, Aqua Zumba, etc. (all things we offer at YWCA El Paso gyms, btw) until you find something that is fun, impactful, and will keep you interested and challenged in the long run.

3. Focus on health, not numbers.

You may feel like you aren’t succeeding if your main focus is weight loss, or how much you can lift, or the distance you ran on the treadmill and you aren’t happy with your numbers. But just by exercising and being active, you are making incredible strides for your health.

4. Find a support group!

One of the best things about exercising at a YWCA El Paso gym is the community that has formed at each location. From instructors and trainers to branch directors and administrators, and OF COURSE the other members, everyone wants to see you succeed! By having a workout buddy or support system, you’ll hold yourself more accountable and be able to celebrate your successes with others on the same journey as you.
