Ann Horak, Ph.D., is now a member of the YWCA USA Board of Directors. The primary role of the YWCA USA Board of Directors is to provide visionary and strategic leadership to ensure the success of YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Dr. Horak will help shape the direction of YWCA USA and the 213 local YWCA associations, serve as an ambassador for the organization, and represent YWCA El Paso del Norte Region (YWCA El Paso) and other local associations at the national level.
Dr. Horak is currently an Associate Professor of Practice in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at El Paso. In her almost 20 years at UTEP, she has taught English Literature, Women and Gender Studies, and Religious Studies. She has served on the YWCA El Paso Board of Directors since 2013 and is currently chair of the organization’s Advocacy Committee.
“I am excited to serve on the board of an organization that does so much for women and people of color in the United States, especially one that has already been a huge part of my life,” said Dr. Horak. “It is also an honor to represent El Paso on a national stage and to communicate the needs and stories of our region to other leaders from around the country.”
“Ann has been a key member and leader of YWCA El Paso’s board for six years and it is incredibly fitting that she is now able to share her inspirational ideals and leadership with the national board,” said Debbie Hand, YWCA El Paso Board of Directors President. “Our entire organization is proud of her and it’s something the entire community should be proud of.”
More than two million women and families participate in YWCA programs each year, with 213 local YWCA associations and 1000 locations in 46 states and the District of Columbia. Board members are nominated by a local association and then each YWCA association is notified of the candidates and votes on each new board member. Dr. Horak’s tenure on the board began Saturday, June 8 at YWCA USA’s annual meeting.
