Shirley Leavell is a native El Pasoan who has been involved with the YWCA in many capacities for more than 50 years. An excellent fundraiser, she was on the board in the 1960’s and worked diligently to help raise the money to build the Joyce Jaynes branch on Brown Street.
When the decision was made to expand YWCA services to the fast growing east side of El Paso in the 1970’s, Shirley and her husband Charles, who was also very involved in the YWCA, donated the land to build the branch. The board of directors voted to honor Shirley by naming the branch after her.
